Pandemic Influenza / Avian Flu
When a new strain of influenza virus emerges,
people have no natural protection. If the new influenza virus is easily
transmitted from person to person, it can result in a serious disease
affecting people worldwide. This is called influenza pandemic. Influenza
pandemics occurred in 1918, 1957 and 1968. The next influenza pandemic will
occur when a new strain of influenza virus emerges that is easily
transmitted from person to person.
Avian flu or “bird flu” is caused by influenza
viruses and occurs naturally among wild birds. The H5N1 strain currently
circulating in other parts of the world has caused significant illness and
death among wild birds and domestic poultry. Thus far, this strain of “bird
flu” is not easily passed to humans. However, some people have become sick
after extensive direct contact with domestic poultry.
In the event of a pandemic influenza/avian flu
outbreak at Worcester State College, the President or designee will
determine if and when the College will close. The campus community will be
notified in accordance with established procedures (see 'Inclement
Weather Policy')
