Benefit Concert for Worcester County Food Bank

(WORCESTER – March 16, 2005)  According to the Worcester County Food Bank the demand for food has increased by 38% in the last four years. In order to address this serious issue, the Worcester State College alumni will hold a food drive, “A Time For Sharing,” to collect non-perishable food items for the Worcester County Food Bank.

Alumni Board member and chair of “A Time For Sharing,” John F. Monfredo said, “We want to bring to light the need for everyone to be involved in stamping out hunger in Worcester County and Massachusetts.  It is estimated that over 650,000 people living in Massachusetts have income below the poverty line.”

The kick-off for the event for the food drive will be a benefit concert from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 31, 2005 in the Blue Lounge of the Student Center at the college. Music will be provided by Worcester-based band, “Soul Movement,” and guest band, “Giraffe.”  The bands will be accompanied by Worcester-ite professional singer, Sunta Africa.  The groups have donated their talents for this worthwhile event.

Admission for the event will be non-perishable food items or a $3.00 admission fee.   Canned goods from April 1st to 14th can be brought to the college where barrels will be placed throughout the campus.  Checks can be made out to the Worcester County Food Bank.  Cash for food and all the food collected will be turned over to the Worcester County Food Bank for distribution.

“This event is an awareness effort on the part of the alumni to call attention to the chronic hunger issue right in this state. It is estimated that about 425,000 people in Massachusetts lack access to adequate food sources according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.  In addition, figures show that in Worcester, one child in three lives in a family unable to meet its basic need for food,” said Monfredo.

The Worcester State College alumni hope to do their share in combating  hunger with a major food drive again at its College Homecoming celebration in October.
