COLLEGE CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Worcester State College in association with the Student Events Committee
(SEC) and the Third World Alliance (TWA) are celebrating Black History Month
throughout the month of February with a number of events.
SEC will be showing the movie Amistad.
Released in 1997, the movie is based on a true event and vividly portrays
the plight of Africans who were inhumanely shipped to
America to become slaves.
A slave revolt results in a murder trial. The showings will be at
9 p.m.
on February 6th in the Dowden Hall Lounge, at
9 p.m. on February 8th in
the Dowden Hall Lounge, and at
2 p.m.
on February 9th in the Student Center Auditorium (N/S Auditorium).
TWA will be hosting a
lecture by Kevin Powell, who is an activist for the National Association for
the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), author of Who’s Gonna Carry the
Weight? and a member of MTV’s first “Real World” cast. The lecture will be
held at 10 a.m.
in the Student Center Auditorium as well as the Blue Lounge.
Also sponsored by TWA is a
lecture on “Hidden Meaning Behind Negro Spirituals” at 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on
February 18th in the Student Center’s Blue Lounge.
Bringing an exciting
musical program to the College during the day, there will be a gospel
concert performed by We R Persuaded at 11 a.m. on February 26th in
the Student Center’s Exhibit Area.
These events are free and
open to the public.
