Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TITLE II REPORT RELEASED ON
QUALITY OF TEACHER EDUCATION AT WSC
(Worcester, MA –
April 25, 2003) According to the Worcester State College (WSC) Title II
Report, teacher education students had a total pass rate of 99 percent on
the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) for the academic year
2001-2002. In basic skills, the aggregate pass rate for WSC was 99% and the
statewide pass rate was 95%. In subject areas, the aggregate pass rate for
WSC was 100% and the statewide pass rate was 93%. The summary and total
pass rate for WSC was 99% and statewide it was 91%.
“Under federal
guidelines, pass rates are made available only for programs in which there
are ten or more students. We did not have ten students in the content areas
for the middle and secondary school preparation programs, so no pass rates
are reported. However, all students who took these middle and secondary
content area tests for program completion passed, giving Worcester State
College students an aggregate pass rate for the content area exams of
100%.,” said Elaine Tateronis, Ph.D., chair of the Education Department at
WSC.
“These excellent
scores that Worcester State College students achieved underscore the
commitment of the students and the College to be second to none in teacher
preparation,” said WSC President Janelle C. Ashley. “A great challenge
faces these graduates as they enter their chosen career. We are confident
that they will set the bar even higher.”
During the 2001-2002
academic year, 748 total students were enrolled in undergraduate and
graduate programs at WSC leading to some kind of licensure. During that
same year, 72 students who qualified as “program completers,” participated
in undergraduate student teaching, with a ratio of student teachers to
supervisors as 10 to 1.
