FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

American Classics New and Old in WSC Theatre 2004-2005 Season

(Worcester -- August 31, 2004) The Department of Visual and Performing Arts will present works from the American dramatic canon in its forthcoming season.

Tales of the Lost Formicans, an absurd comedy by Constance Congdon, is a riff on alienation and aliens in contemporary American life.  The production will run November 4-7, with performances at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.  In the spring, Professor John Howell Hood will make his WSC directing debut as he stages Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie.   Performances are slated for April 7 through 10.

The author of Tales of the Lost Formicans, Constance Congdon, is currently teaching playwrighting at Amherst College.  Her plays have been produced all over the world.  Tales of the Lost Formicans is already considered a modern classic, having been produced by over eighty companies in the United States alone.  Tony Kushner, author of Angels in America, calls Congdon “….one of the best playwrights our country, and our language, has produced.” WSC director, Professor Ann Marie Shea participated in Congdon’s playwrighting seminar at the Last Frontier Theatre Conference in Valdez, Alaska, in June, and was struck by the author’s frankness, humility and genuine joy in her craft.  Only Connie Congdon, she maintains, would be able to find the humor in all the “A” words that terrify us so—Alzheimer’s, adolescence, adultery, and—oh yes—alien invasion.

Auditions for Tales of the Lost Formicans will be held Wednesday and Thursday, September 8 and 9 in the Administration Theatre.  All WSC community members are eligible to audition.  Rehearsals will be held Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Students may enroll in TH 321 Rehearsal and Performance to earn 3 credit hours (suitable for either Fine Arts distribution, theatre minor or elective credit).

The cast covers a range from elderly to teen-aged, male and female.  As usual, WSC casting is “color-blind,” with all ethnicities welcome.

Professor Hood will be announcing audition and casting news for The Glass Menagerie as the fall semester progresses.
