College Builds Awareness Through Month
Without Violence
(Worcester,
MA – October 1, 2004) Worcester State
College (WSC) will join other community organizations and colleges calling
for a Month Without Violence during October to raise awareness about issues
concerning violence against women. This is the fifth year in a row that WSC
has participated in this effort and will participate in several high-powered
events. The following is a list of events scheduled throughout the month:
TUESDAY OCTOBER 5TH, 7:00 PM: Iron Jawed Angels film screening at
the Bijou Theater, Worcester. This award-winning feature film, starring
Oscar winners Hilary Swank and Anjelica Huston, recounts the passage of the
19th amendment. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last January,
was shown on HBO last Spring, and has been nominated for five Emmys and a
Humanitas Prize. Panel discussion to follow.
THURSDAY OCTOBER 7TH, 10:00-11:00 AM: Eager Auditorium, Sullivan Building,
Worcester
State College. Learn about the differences between Bush and Kerry on
policies affecting women. Misty Perez, Planned Parenthood, will speak.
There will be a voter registration table sponsored by the WSC Women’s Forum.
TUESDAY OCTOBER 12TH, 7:00 PM,
Ghosh
Center for Science & Technology Auditorium
(Room 102), Worcester State College. Candace Allen Scola Memorial Lecture:
Are You in a War Zone? Connecting “Here at Home” and “Over There.”
Presentation by Cynthia Enloe, Clark University, professor and
internationally known political scientist and activist. The talk offers a
feminist approach for investigating the links between war and militarism and
violence against women.
MONDAY OCTOBER 18TH, 7:45 AM,
The Daybreak Breakfast, College of the Holy Cross, Worcester. Keynote
Speaker: Jean Haertl, Anti-Violence Advocate, Director of the Employees
Against Domestic and Workplace Violence Initiative. Proceeds will go to the
Worcester County Battered Women’s Shelter.
MONDAY OCTOBER 18TH, 7-9 PM,
Learning Resource Center, Room 121, Worcester State College. Film Screening:
Senorita Extraviada: Missing Young Women. Film documentary by
award-winning director, Lourdes Portillo, exposes the murder of 265 women in
the past eleven years in Juarez,
Mexico. Co-sponsored by the Women’s
Forum.
THURSDAY OCTOBER 21st, 2:30-4:30 PM,
Learning Resource Center, Room 117, Worcester State College. Film Screening:
Independent Media in a Time of War.
Features Amy Goodman, host of the independent news show “Democracy Now.”
Analyzes U.S. mainstream media news coverage of the war in Iraq. Panel
discussion to follow. Co-sponsored by the Communications Department.
