Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tenth Annual Youth Breakfast
Honoring Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr.
(Worcester,
MA – January 12, 2004) The Tenth
Annual Youth Breakfast honoring the memory of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. will be held at Worcester State College, 8:30 a.m., Saturday,
January 17, 2004 in the WSC Gymnasium.
The Martin Luther King
Community Breakfast has become one of the premier community events of the
year for Worcester youth. The theme of the MLK Youth Breakfast, Youth
Against Violence, is a program for youth, by youth, designed to build
awareness of the principles and philosophy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
It was the MLK
Committee’s concern that many Worcester youth are not knowledgeable about
Dr. King and his philosophy. As a result, the first MLK Youth Breakfast was
held in 1995. The first event drew 200 youth, the second, 500, and the
number continues to grow.
The event is designed
to build awareness, develop communication skills, and develop leadership
skills. All honorees, speakers and award recipients (Community Service and
MLK Poetry Contest Winners) will be youth from the Worcester areas that are
selected by their peers. Angel Hampton will receive the Youth Service Award
for her commitment as an advocate for youth, and James Williams, Jr. will
receive the Community Service Award. Two Worcester State College
President’s Scholarships will be awarded during the breakfast. Local youth
talent will also perform song, dance, and readings.
The MLK Youth Breakfast
is open to everyone. Tickets are $5 per person. For more information,
contact the Diversity Office/Affirmative Action, Worcester State College,
(508) 929-8117.
