YOUNG LATINOS CELEBRATE PROGRAM COMPLETION

 (Worcester, MA -- June 1, 2004) The Latino Education Institute (LEI): Home of the Worcester Working Coalition for Latino Students at Worcester State College will hold the Program Graduation and End-of-the-Academic year Celebration to honor and celebrate young Latinos and parents for their participation in the LEI programs designed to enhance educational achievement and personal development, at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 in the Blue Lounge of the Student Center at Worcester State College.. 

 Sarai Rivera, Academic Coordinator of the LEI, will introduce Dr. Janelle Ashley, President of Worcester State College, and Dr. David Caruso, Vice President of Academic Affairs, who will provide welcoming remarks.  Dr. Maria Del Rio, Executive Director of the LEI, will provide opening remarks.

Students and parents will share their stories of academic growth and development. Marco Estrella, who is a student at Worcester State College; Peter Jovel, a Doherty High graduate and freshman at New England Institute of Art; Natacha Nieves, who had abandoned high school and will be attending Quinsigamond Community College; and Edlin Ortiz, a distinguished student at South High, will be presenting testimonials.  Noemi Roman, a parent with children in the Worcester Public Schools, will also tell us her story of becoming an informed and actively involved parent.  Participants and volunteers will receive certificates of recognition.

The programs are Innovative Services for Latino Adolescents (ISLA), Latina Achievers in Search of Success (LASOS), Latino Youth Unlimited (LYU), “Familias Activas en la Mision del Aprendizaje” (FAMA)/ Families Active in the Mission of Learning, Latino School to College Initiative, and Latino College Enrollment & Retention Initiative.

The event will conclude with appreciation and closing remarks from Judge Luis G. Perez and Gladys Rodriguez-Parker from the Worcester Working Coalition for Latino Students (WWCLS).
