WHAT:            Awards Ceremony for ISLA, LASOS, LYU and LFIA participants     

WHEN:            6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 4, 2003

WHERE:          Student Center Auditorium, Student Center, Worcester State College

(Worcester, MA – June 3, 2003) Latino students who have successfully participated in the academic programs offered by the Latino Education Institute, Home of the Worcester Working Coalition for Latino Students (WWCLS) at Worcester State College will be recognized at an awards ceremony, Wednesday, June 4, 2003 at Worcester State College.

Worcester’s Latino community is showing our nation the importance of education through its programs and strong partnerships,” said Congressman Jim McGovern. McGovern’s co-chair of WWCLS, the Honorable Judge Luis Perez and WSC President Janelle C. Ashley will welcome the students and their parents at this special ceremony that recognizes the academic achievements of these Latino students. 

The programs are ISLA (Innovative Services for Latino Adolescents) which is an after-school MCAS enrichment and recreation program for 7th-9th graders; LASOS (Latina Achievers in Search of Success) which is an after-school program for 5th-6th grade Latinas and their mothers; LYU (Latino Youth Limited) which reconnects Latino drop-outs with educational programs; and LFIA (Latino Family Involvement Academy) which is a program that works with Latino families to navigate the school system. 

The WWCLS was one of the recipients of the John C. Rennie Award for Team Leadership in Standards-Based Education Reform.  The selection is made by the Rennie Award Committee, composed of representatives from Mass Insight Education and the Massachusetts Business Alliance for Education. The WWCLS was recognized for its after-school program Innovative Services for Latino Adolescents (I.S.L.A.) program and its public education campaign in the Latino community.
