Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Davis Educational Foundation Awards
College $248,000
To Develop Liberal Arts and Science Curriculum
WORCESTER, Mass. – December
14, 2007 – Worcester State College
has been awarded a $248,000 grant over three years from the Davis
Educational Foundation of Falmouth, Maine, to support the implementation of
the new general education program, named the liberal arts and science
curriculum (LASC).
The curriculum was developed over several
years by joint faculty and administration committees and approved by
Worcester State College President Janelle Ashley in May, 2007.
“Advancing the goals of
liberal education, the new curriculum enables students to experience general
education as a coherent and interdisciplinary whole. The structure of the
LASC promotes a greater number of shared experiences for students and
requires progressively more challenging courses that address a broad range
of student outcomes. Additionally, the new curriculum promotes academic
rigor, in part through careful and productive assessment,” said Professor
Kristen Waters, interim coordinator of the Liberal Arts and Science
Curriculum.
The grant
from the Davis Educational Foundation will:
·
Fund additional faculty
leadership positions to implement the first major change in the general
education curriculum at WSC in thirty years;
·
Provide professional
development for faculty members to develop new and redesign existing courses
in ways that focus on student-centered learning and specific course
objectives;
·
Create a comprehensive program
of assessment for the LASC;
·
Support Coordination of
Academic and Student Affairs contributions to the First-year Experience
Program;
·
Develop a system of advising
for the new curriculum, purchase additional computing software for tracking
and advising, and assist faculty in learning advising tools and practices.
The Davis Educational
Foundation was established by Stanton and Elizabeth Davis after Mr. Davis’
retirement as chairman of Shaw’s Supermarkets, Inc.
