WORCESTER STATE COLLEGE RECEIVES
RARE GEMS
(Worcester,
MA – September 9, 2003) Worcester State College (WSC) recently took
possession of $45,000 in rare “GEMs.” Although these “GEMs” aren’t
considered precious stones, they sparkle like diamonds. Five Global
Electric Motorcars (GEMs) were donated to WSC by DaimlerChrysler Company
through the regional collaboration of the Central Massachusetts Public
Higher Education Alliance. The two-passenger utility vehicles (Long-Back
NEV) with diamond-plated flatbeds are valued at $8,695.
The GEMs are a new breed
of green cars – they are inexpensive, reduce traffic congestion and do not
produce exhaust emissions as they run on battery power. Each car charges in
less than 8-10 hours. Worcester State College will be using their GEMs for
grounds and maintenance use, moving sensitive computer and multi-media
equipment and general campus use.
According to David
Caruso, vice president for Academic Affairs, “We learned about this offer
from DaimlerChrysler at one of our regular meetings with our regional
partners Mount Wachusett and Quinsigamond Community Colleges and Fitchburg
State College. With just a couple of phone calls, we received our five GEMs
free. We are really looking forward to putting them to use on campus, and
hope they will serve as a focal point for discussion on environmental
issues.”
