Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Acclaimed Documentarian Explores “Private
Violence” of South Asia
(Worcester,
MA – February 11, 2004)
Grace Poore,
the acclaimed writer, director and producer of the award winning video
documentary, The Children We Sacrifice, will lecture and lead a
discussion after the showing of her video at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, February
25, 2004 in the Multimedia Auditorium (Room 102) of the Ghosh Center for
Science and Technology at Worcester State College.
Poore, who
won the 2001 Creating A Voice Award and the 2000 Rosebud Award for the
video, creatively catalogs the “private violence” of incest and sexual abuse
of both women and children in South Asia. The documentary has been screened
at a number of festivals including the April 2002 Women’s Film Festival in
Seoul and the June 2000 United Nations Women’s Film Festival. The video is
not a sensationalist treatment of women who share their stories, but a
moving validation of those who confront a deeply camouflaged issue.
Poore,
born and raised in Malaysia, is a graduate of Syracuse University and has
lived in the United States for over 20 years. Her documentaries are used by
advocates working to stop child sexual abuse, women’s rights groups,
battered women’s programs, mental health agencies, colleges and universities
in the United States and around the world.
The
event is co-sponsored by Worcester State College Women's Studies Program and
Center for the Study of Human Rights. It is free and open to the public.
