Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CRIMES OF THE HEART
Award-winning Director Adam Zahler to Direct Fall Production
(October 25, 2006 - Worcester, MA) Worcester State
College has recruited one of Boston’s finest to put on the college’s
upcoming theatrical performance. Award-winning director Adam Zahler will be
the man behind the institution’s fall production of Crimes of the Heart.
The Department of Visual and Performing Arts is confident that Zahler will
impress local audiences this year. His reputation truly precedes him –
Zahler has directed over 40 theatrical productions including eight college
plays. In 2005, Zahler took home an Elliot Norton Award for his work on the
play Permanent Collection. The Elliot Norton Awards, notoriously referred to
in the Boston theater world as the “Boston Tony’s”, recognized Zahler as
Outstanding Director for the year.
Zahler’s latest endeavor, Crimes of the Heart, is a heart felt comedy
set in Hazlehurst, Mississippi that features three sisters struggling
through life issues under unusual circumstances. Babe, Lenny, and Meg are
reunited in their seemingly quaint hometown after news has broken that Babe
recently shot her husband. Amidst the insanity surrounding the shooting,
Lenny attempts to celebrate her birthday and Meg returns after failing to
embark on a successful singing career in California.
The play saw great success in the early to mid-80s, becoming a Broadway
smash and a motion picture adaptation. Crimes of the Heart earned
three Oscar nominations and won a Golden Globe in 1987. New York Magazine
praised the play stating, “From time to time a play comes along that
restores one’s faith in our theatre…” The Broadway production took the
theater world by storm, going on to win three Tony awards, including the
prestigious title of “Best Play” in 1982.
The Worcester State College
production of Crimes of the Heart will star Jennifer LeBel as “Babe”,
Ruby Pontbriand as “Lenny”, and Christine Bussell as “Meg”. Also appearing:
Winfred Rembert as “Barnette Lloyd”, Judd Bornheimer as “Doc Porter”, and
Tasha Matthews as “Chick Boyle”. Contributors include Susan Johnson-Hood in
costume design and John Hood in set design and lighting.
The performance will debut Thursday, November 16th and continue to run
through Sunday, November 19th. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night the show
will begin at 8:00 P.M., and on Sunday at 2:00 P.M.
