Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AWARD-WINNING MUSICAL TO BE PERFORMED
(Worcester, MA – March 19, 2003) The Visual
and Performing Arts Department of Worcester State College will present the
musical, Carnival, at 8:00 p.m. on April 3 – 5 and April 10 – 12 and
at 2:00 p.m. on April 6 and 13, in the Administration Theatre at Worcester
State College.
Carnival won two Tony
Awards and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical when it
opened on Broadway in 1961. Music and lyrics are by Bob Merrill, including
the well-known, “Love Makes the World Go Round,” and the book by Michael
Stewart. Carnival is a story about a girl, Lili, who joins up with
the troupe of the Grande Imperial Cirque de Paris. A rivalry ensues between
the puppeteer and the magician for Lili’s affection. This production blends
comedy and pathos perfectly. The effect is “America’s Magical Musical” with
enchanting appeal. Carnival will be presented by Arrangement with
Tams-Witmark Music Library, Inc.
The student cast list will include Jill
Odgren as the heroine, Lili Daurier; Ballah Kemah as Paul
Berthalet, the puppeteer; Alan Hoyt as Marco the Magnificent
magician; Kerry Violetta as Rosalie; Rob Latino as Jacquot;
and Erik Johnsen as Schlegal. The puppets will be played by Ted
McIvor as Carrot Top; Rob Latino as Horrible Henry; Betsy
LaBelle as Marguerite; and Scott Englund as Renardo. There will
also be a supporting cast of over 40 singers, dancers, clowns, roustabouts,
vendors, gymnasts, and magicians. Lucinda Kidder will direct the
production; musical direction by Dr. Christie Nigro (VPA); choreography by
Amy Ware, technical direction by Martin Lynch; and accompanist Kyle Martin (VPA).
A full orchestra will also accompany.
