ARE YOU IN A WAR ZONE?

(Worcester, MA- October 4, 2004)  The Candace Allen Scola Memorial Lecture Series on Violence Against Women presents “Are You in a War Zone? Connecting ‘Here at Home’ with Over There’” at 7:00 PM, Tuesday, October 12 in the Ghosh Center Multimedia Room (ST102) at Worcester State College. Clark University professor and internationally known political scientist and activist Cynthia Enloe will offer a feminist approach for investigating the links between war and militarism and violence against women.

Cynthia Enloe received a Ph.D. from the University of California/Berkeley and has served as chair of Clark University’s Government Department and Director of Women’s Studies. Professor Enloe is currently a Research Professor in the International Development Department and teaches the intensive seven-week seminar, “Gender, Militarization, and Development. She has been awarded Clark’s “Outstanding Teacher of the Year” three times and has been named the University Senior Faculty Fellow for Excellence in Teaching and Scholarship. In recent years, Enloe has written for Ms. Magazine and Village Voice and has appeared on National Public Radio and the BBC.

Candace Allen Scola was a bright engaging student at Worcester State College when her education–and her life–was cut short by an unknown assailant more than two years ago.  Her violent death sent shockwaves through her classmates and professors.

Members of Gamma Theta Upsilon, the Geography Honor Society, of which Scola was vice president, created and dedicated a meditation garden and the Women’s Studies Program raised funds to endow a lecture series in her name for the prevention of violence against women.

Funds are used to bring speakers to campus, publicize the event and raise awareness.  T

This event is free and open to the public.  Donations to the Candace Allen Scola Lecture Endowment Fund will be accepted.
