Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Campaign 2004:
College Students Organize
to Educate
Themselves and Shape the Future
“Bush,
Kerry or Third Party Candidates: Does It Matter?”
(Worcester,
MA
– October 21, 2004) Worcester State College students will gather in
the Exhibit Area of the Student Center at 1:00 PM, Thursday, October 28,
2004 to
present their research on the media coverage of the platforms of various
presidential candidates running for office in 2004. The presentations will
be followed by a forum in which students will make their issues and
concerns heard about each candidate and related issues of interest and
importance to them.
In order to take the
election more seriously, and become more active citizens, the students from
a Media Criticism course taught by Professor Julie Frechette in the
Communications Department, will present their findings from a three-week
research project aimed at analyzing the interconnections between mainstream
media, interest groups, public opinion polls, campaign advertising, and
responsible coverage of Campaign 2004.
As part of Generation
Y—the largest voting block in the
U.S. representing
over 14 million eligible voters between the ages of 18-24—the students are
organizing this event as an effort to revitalize their peers through
informed discussions about politics. With less than 30% of their generation
expected to turn-out in the voting polls, the students will aim not only to
increase awareness but increase participation in voting.
The event is
sponsored by the Communications Department at Worcester State College and is
free and open to the public.
