Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Students Organize 13th Annual Auction for the Homeless
(Worcester, MA – February 20, 2004) Supporting two local shelters for
homeless people, Abby’s House and the Mustard Seed, the Student Government
Association (SGA) at Worcester State College (WSC) will hold the 13th
annual Auction for the Homeless. The SGA believes that as the
representative body of the students at WSC, they can address the local
problem of homelessness in Worcester.
Since
the auction began 13 years ago, SGA has contributed over $60,000 in proceeds
to the Mustard Seed Foundation, and because of the auction’s past success,
some of the proceeds can now go to Abby’s House, a local shelter for
homeless women and children. All of the work for the auction is done by
volunteer students, staff, and alumni of Worcester State College. All the
items for the auction are donated by area businesses and families.
Larry
Tony Lopez, a full time WSC student and auction chairperson, said, “Knowing
that what we do will feed someone for a day and impact other people’s lives
is very rewarding.”
Kristie DeSanctis, assistant director of Student Activities and SGA
advisor, said, “The students get a great sense of satisfaction at the end of
the auction. They are finally able to give the proceeds to two
organizations that do so much for Worcester’s homeless population.”
The
13th Annual Auction to Benefit the Homeless will be held on
Thursday, March 10, 2004. The auction will be held in the Student Center’s
Blue Lounge, a preview will begin at 4:30 P.M. and the auction will commence
at 5:30 P.M. Admission is free. A listing of auction items can be found at:
