College to Host National Science Foundation Sponsored
POGIL Workshop in Chemical Education

Worcester State College will host a free one-day interactive Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) Workshop on Saturday, April 12, 2008, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in Sullivan Academic Center, Room 310, 486 Chandler Street, Worcester. Although this workshop is geared towards college level chemistry instructors, instructors at the high school level as well as physics instructors (high school and college) are encouraged to attend. Enrollment is limited and pre-registration is required by visiting http://www.pogil.org/events/WSC.php. Lunch and refreshments as well as a certificate for completing the workshop will be provided to all participants.

POGIL is a teaching strategy where students evaluate information in a group and through guided questions discover course content themselves, rather than simply being told facts. This approach has been shown to promote the ability to think analytically and work effectively as part of a team. It is based on research indicating that teaching by telling does not work for many students and that students are part of an interactive community are more likely to be successful. Knowledge is personal and students enjoy themselves more and develop greater ownership over the material when they are given an opportunity to construct their own understanding.
