Film Series:
Building Bridges of Understanding
Worcester, Massachusetts—The City of Worcester’s
Community Coalition on Bias and Hate, in partnership with the Center for the
Study of Human Rights at Worcester State College, announces Building
Bridges of Understanding, a series of thought-provoking films. The
intent of the film series is to offer an activity that continues to build
upon a commitment by the City to create a welcoming and respectful community
for all people.
Farmingville—Winner of the 2004 Sundance Special
Jury Prize, this film focuses on the late 1990s and the hate-based attempted
murders of two Mexican workers in a Long Island town, unmasking a new front
line in the border wars. Time: Thursday, February, 20, 2008 at 7:00
p.m. Discussion will be facilitated by members of the Worcester
Immigration Coalition.
Lest We Forget–The Black Holocaust—Winner of the
2007 HBO Films Best Documentary, this film brings an educational perspective
on American history that is not taught in most American history books. The
40-minute film will be followed by a 7 minute music video. Discussion will
be facilitated by the film producers from the Lest We Forget Traveling Slave
Museum in Philadelphia and Domingo Guyton of H.O.P.E. Recordz. Time:
Friday, February 22, 2008 at 7:00 p.m.
American Blackout—Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia
McKinney, an advocate for civil rights, exposes the pattern of how black
votes are purposely silenced and the voters are prevented from dissent in
this 2006 Sundance Film Festival prize winner. Time: Saturday, February
23, 2008 at 4:00 p.m.
American History X—A former neo-Nazi skinhead,
Oscar-nominee Edward Norton, tries to prevent his younger brother from going
down the same hate-filled path he did. Nominated for a 1999 Academy Award,
this film offers a compelling look at racism, family and forgiveness.
Time: Saturday, February 23, 2008 at 7:00 p.m.
All films will be shown at the Eager Auditorium in the
Sullivan Building at Worcester State College, 486 Chandler Street,
Worcester, and are free and open to the public. For further information,
