Worcester State College Campus News Item

Released 1/8/2006

Are you broad-minded? Have an adventurous spirit? Intellectually curious about other cultures and the environment?  If so, get involved with the Amazon Project.

Dr. Carlos Fontes (Communication) with two of his students will present the Amazon Project on Monday, January 29 from 3-4:30 p.m. in the Ghosh Science and Technology Center in the auditorium, ST-102. This event is open to the public.

The presentation which will consist of an overview of the Sarayacu tribe, their mode of organizing and their struggle against the oil companies; a screening of a short documentary about the Sarayacu and last year’s trip to the Amazon with student impressions, and the future of the Amazon Project.

In northern Ecuador, reckless oil exploration created an environmental catastrophe, contaminating acres of virgin forests and making it impossible for the indigenous people to earn a living. In 2003, the Sarayacu women, children and men, using spears and blow guns, confronted the oil companies’ workers and wouldn’t allow them to start tests using explosions. From then on, they have been fighting on a legal front and creating a public relations/media front to protect their way of life and to garner support for their plight.
