emeritus/a/i – Masculine singular: emeritus; feminine singular: emerita; plural: emeriti. Denotes individuals who have retired, but retain their rank or title.

entitled, titled - entitled means a right to do something; titled means what something is called.

 

F

faculty and staff - The collective nouns faculty and staff can be used in singular and plural senses (the French faculty meets regularly with the other language faculties; the staff sometimes disagrees among themselves).

farther, further - farther refers to physical distance; further is an extension of time or degree.

faze, phase - faze means to embarrass or disturb: The strike did not faze her; phase denotes an aspect or state: They will phase in the new system this year.

fewer, less - Use fewer for individual items, less for bulk, time or quantity.

first annual – Do not use.

fiscal year – The 12-month period is six months ahead of the calendar year: July 1, 2002-June 30, 2003. In writing, write fiscal year out first, then use FY.  The fiscal year began in July for FY2002-2003.

forward – not forwards

fractions - Spell out amounts of less than one using hyphens: Two-thirds, three-quarters

Convert anything over one to decimals.

full time, full-time – Hyphenate when used as a compound modifier: He goes to school full time. He is a full-time student.

fund raising - A noun. Fund-raising is an adjective. Fund-raiser is a noun. Fund raising is important to the College. The Development Office started a fund-raising campaign. A fund-raiser was hired.

 

G

gray - Not grey.

Gymnasium/ Gym Building – capitalize as a formal name

gym/gymnasium

H

hyphens - Use when two words are combined as an adjective (except with very or words ending in ly). First-hand knowledge. Blue-green sea.

 

I

include, comprise – Use include to introduce a series when the items that follow are only part of the total: the price includes breakfast; use comprise when the full list of individual elements is given: the zoo comprises 100 types of animals.

Internet - Always capitalized. Abbreviated Net.

irregardless – Do not use.

its/it's - Use its for possessive; it's for contraction of it is.

 

J

Jr./Sr. - Do not precede with a comma (Joe Johnson Jr.) except in business correspondence.

job titles – always lowercase. See titles.
