Lesson #1: Basic Vocabulary and Publishing (FrontPage '98)
(click here for a printable version of this page)

Vocabulary Terms:

    • FrontPage Web: a website created and published in Microsoft FrontPage
    • Local Web: a copy of a website that resides on your computer or disk. Normally, the local web is used to create and revise content.
    • Remote Web: a copy of a website that resides on a web server, which is a  computer that enables Internet access to your web material: normally, local webs are published to a separate web server.
    • Publishing: sending a copy of a web from one location to another.
    • FrontPage Explorer: the window in FrontPage in which  you organize and publish your web.
    • FrontPage Editor: the window in FrontPage in which you create and modify individual web pages.
    • Index Page/Default Page: the very first page of your website.

Process Flow:

    • Establish a FrontPage account on a web server (contact Don Vescio or Ken Garello for WSC faculty FrontPage server access).
    • Create your department's web locally.
    • Publish a copy of your department's web to the WSC server.
    • Maintain and develop your department's web locally.
    • Publish any changes or additions to the WSC server.

Background:

    • Your web address will have the following form:

          wwwfac.worcester.edu/department_name

Please note that you cannot change this web address.

    • You may work on your web on any computer that has Microsoft FrontPage '98 installed. Please contact Joyce Danelius for information on installing FrontPage '98 on your office or home machine.
    • IMPORTANT: you must be connected to the WSC campus network to publish your web to the WSC server. If you work on your web on a machine that is not connected to the WSC network, then you will have to copy the web to disk, then transfer it to a machine that is connected to the WSC network. Access is limited to the WSC network to maintain security.
    • Use your normal network and email login name/password when publishing to the WSC server; if you are working on one of WSC's public machines, then preface your username as follows:

          wsc_domain/username

Step One: Creating an Empty Local Web (DO THIS STEP ONLY ONCE TO GET STARTED!)

All webs will start out empty; it is up to you to provide  content. To begin, start FrontPage'98. When the program launches, you will see a  window that looks something like the illustration below:

Please note that you will not see any webs listed in the center of this window when you run FrontPage '98 for the first time. Also note that Create a New FrontPage Web option has been selected.

Click the button next to Create a New FrontPage Web, then click OK to move to the next window:

Select the button From Wizard or Template in Step 1. In Step 1, also select Empty Web.

In Step 2's textbox, enter the name of your department's web exactly as it was provided to you. You do not enter the wwwfac.worcester.edu prefix, however.

Click the Change button to specify the location on your machine in which you wish to store your department's web. Remember, the local copy of your web will reside on your computer and will not be accessible through the Internet. When you click the Change button, the following dialogue box will appear:

Enter the prefix C:\ before the name of your web. The C:\ tells FrontPage that you will store your local copy of your web on your C: drive. Click OK to continue. You will return to the new FrontPage Web window:

Note that the location of your new web now is specified under the textbox.

Clicking OK will display a confirmation screen. Click Yes to create a local copy of your web.

You are now ready to begin to develop your department's site. Once your empty web is created,  FrontPage's Explorer is displayed:

Step Two: Creating a Simple Page

Under the Tools menu item in FrontPage Explore, select Show FrontPage Editor:

Selecting Show FrontPage Editor will display a new window:

Under the File Menu item, select New:

Selecting New will display the following option window. Select Normal Page, then click OK:

You will return to FrontPage Editor and can begin to work on your very first web page.

Step Three: Saving Your Work.

The very first page of your FrontPage web must be named index. You may give any additional pages any names that you wish, but try to follow the conventions listed below:

        1. Use no capital letters in your file names
        2. Use no spaces in your file names
        3. Use no special characters (%, ^, #, etc.) in your file names

After you have finished work on your page, go to the File menu item, then select Save:

Enter the file name for your page in the textbox labeled URL, and give your page a brief description in the Title textbox:

Click OK to save your work.

Step Four: Publishing Your Local Web to the WSC Server

Return to FrontPage Explorer by clicking on the appropriate button on the bottom of your screen. Under the File menu item, select Publish FrontPage Web:

In the Publish window, check the Publish changed pages only option. Click the More Webs button to specify the location of your site on the WSC server:

Clicking the More Webs button will display a dialogue box. In the dialogue box, enter the address of your WSC web exactly as it has been given to you. Click OK to publish any changes or additions that you made to the local copy of your web:

Note that you must add the prefix http:// before you give the full address of your WSC web.

Clicking OK will return you to the Publish window. To publish a copy of your local web to the WSC server, click OK.
