(click here for a printable version of this page)

Vocabulary:

  • .GIF, .JPG, .JPEG: the formats for images on the web. Use .GIF to line drawings, cartoons, or simple color images; use .JPG for color photographs and prints.
  • Import: bringing in a copy of a file into a FrontPage web

Process Flow:

  • Save images to disk.
  • Import images into FrontPage.
  • Add images to your web.
  • Save your web.
  • Publish your web to update pages and site.

Background:

  • In traditional word processing, once an image is added to a document, it becomes part of the document itself--the document is saved as a single file that contains both text and images.
  • In web authoring, images are never part of the actual page file. Images are always saved as separate files; they are linked to the main document.
  • When creating a page with images, a pages and all of its separate image files must be uploaded in order for it to display properly. Fortunately, FrontPage takes care of this process automatically.
  • Please note that images add considerable visual support to your documentation; also note that images will increase the file sizes of your pages.
  • The larger the file size of your page, the slower the download time.

Step One: Import Images

In FrontPage Explorer, go to the Files main menu item and select Import:

Selecting the Import option will display the Import dialogue window. This window is used to import files, folders, and even complete webs:

Click on the Add File button. The Add File to Import List window next will be displayed.

Note that the Add File to Import List window looks almost identical to the Open File window that is displayed in Word or Excel. Navigate to the folder or location in which you have saved your images.

In the example below, images have been saved in a folder called langlit:

Select the files that you want to import into your FrontPage web by clicking with your mouse. You can select multiple files by holding down the Control key while clicking.

Once you have selected the files that you want to import, click the Open button. Clicking Open will return you to the Import window. Note that the files that you have selected are now listed in the windows main display box. To import these files, click the OK button.

Step Two: Adding Images to a Web Page

Open a new or existing page in FrontPage Editor and place your cursor at the location where you want to add an image. Go to the Insert main menu item and select Insert Picture from File. The Picture dialogue window will appear.

Select the image that you wish to add by clicking on it with your mouse. Note that you can preview the image that you have selected in the right pane of the Picture window.

Click OK to add the image to your web page.

Save your page, and then publish it as normal. FrontPage will coordinate the images with the page.
