(click here for a printable version of this page)

Vocabulary Terms:

  • .GIF, .JPG, .JPEG: the formats for images on the web.  Use .GIF to line drawings, cartoons, or simple color images; use .JPG for color photographs and prints.
  • Download: copying a file from a remote location to your personal (local) computer.
  • Import: bringing in a copy of a file into a specific computer program

Process Flow:

  • Copy (download) images from the web.
  • Save copies of the image to your local machine

Step One:

Move cursor over the image or picture that you wish to copy; click on the RIGHT mouse button and a drop-down menu will appear:

Step Two:

If you are using Microsoft's Internet Explorer, left click on the "Save Picture As... option to copy the image to your computer; if you are using Netscape's Composer, left click on the "Save Image As..." option to copy the image to your computer:

Microsoft's Internet Explorer   Netscape's Composer

Step Three:

Once you've selected the "Save Picture As..." or "Save Image As..." option, the familiar "Save" dialogue box will appear. Note that the name of the image is already entered in the "File name" box. You can change the name of the file to make it more memorable. Select the directory in which you'll store the image, and you're done!

In this example, the name of the image is "LoginKey." The image will be stored in the "Windows" directory folder.
