Subscription Databases Available Only to the WSC Community

 

   Oxford Dictionary of Psychology -  2nd ed. (2006) Oxford Reference Online.  11,000 entries. Library Journal calls this reference work sound, readable, reliable, probably the best single-volume dictionary of its kind.
 

Psychology: Journals, Magazines - provides abstracts and indexing for more than 610 titles, with over 520 titles available in full text. Coverage represents a range of psychology disciplines including behavioral, clinical, cognitive, developmental, experimental, industrial, personality, physiological, psychobiology, psychometrics and social psychology.

ProQuest Social Science Journals - a definitive resource for those who need access to a variety of specialized journals. The database includes over 510 titles, with more than 280 available in full text. Information on hundreds of topics including addiction studies, family studies, urban studies and international relations.

  •  Psych INFO - Over 1.5 million records from 1887 to the present in what is considered to be the most comprehensive international database of psychology. Includes academic research and practice literature in the fields of medicine, psychiatry, education, social work, social science and organizational behavior.   
  • Academic Search Complete  indexes both popular and academic periodicals in all subject areas. Search Tips (PDF)
  • Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection. This database provides nearly 575 full text publications, including 550 peer-reviewed titles. Nearly every full text title included in this database is indexed in PsycINFO. This database is updated daily.

MEDLINE - created by the National Library of Medicine, users can search abstracts from over 4,000 current biomedical journals. Authoritative medical information on medicine, nursing, psychiatry, the health care system, and more. We have 3 different ways to access MEDLINE:

  Citation and abstract information from over 750 educational journals and related documents from the Educational Resource Information Center, and report literature. There are over 1.1 million citations going back to 1966.  107,000 full text non-journal documents (ED numbers issued 1993-2004) are now available for free.

We have 3 different ways to access ERIC:

books2.jpg (7821 bytes)  Public Affairs International.  Public affairs and worlds issues with coverage from 1972 to the present. An index to over 1/2 million articles, books, government documents, Internet sites and documents from more than 120 countries. Obviously useful for global issues such as affirmative action, AIDS, ethnicity, climate change, political persecution, women's rights, war and conflict, etc.

  • Amoeba Web - psychology web sources of all types; a great site to start with. Vanguard University of Southern California.
  • Encyclopedia of Psychology - Dept. of Psychology at Jacksonville (AL) State University. Find "original information generated by respected researchers and practitioners in various fields of psychology" as well as a "hierarchical database of links to websites providing information about scientific psychology." The search engines are best used with simple terms.
  • PsychCrawler - sponsored by the APA; created to provide quick access to quality online content in the field 
  • Psych Topics - APA's official site. Links to psych databases; search feature and subject tree. Follow links to related articles and book information.
  • Psych Web - for students and teachers of psychology. Site has received many web awards for excellence.
  • Psychology Matters - ssearchable site; compendium of psychological research that demonstrates the application and value of psychological science in our everyday lives.
  • Research Ethics - institutional reviews, guidelines for research on humans and animals; informed consent, ethical codes of professional societies
  • Social Psychology - the largest social psychology database on the Internet. More than 13,000 links related to psychology; browse topics or use its search engine to search the site.
  • Top 20 Psychology -also has sites in clinical, cognitive, educational, social psychology; along with top sites in related fields of dreams, history, psychologists, and test / quizzes.

Search Engines  - Meta Sites

These are "gateway" sites: they don't have psychology information, but link you to other sites that do. Less exciting than Psychic Friends Network, but more practical.

  • Hardin Meta Directory - [of Internet Health Sources]. Access to comprehensive sites on health-related subjects. It is a list of lists, but the best on the 'Net - it leads you to sites containing [mental] health information.
  • Social Science Information Gateway - aims to provide a trusted source of selective, high quality information for researchers and students in the social sciences. Part of the UK Resource Discovery Network.
  • Mental Help Net - largest and most comprehensive guide on the Web; promotes mental health and wellness education and advocacy
  • MetaSites - from the online Encyclopedia of Psychology
  • Psychology WWW Virtual Library - . Sites listed on The Psychology Virtual Library are inspected and evaluated for their adequacy as information sources before they are linked. Maintained by Dialogical.net

Web Directories

There are excellent subject directories on the web. that can point you to the best online resources in specific areas of psychology. These human guides to the Internet are a great way to find the best of the Web, and often find sites that can't be accessed by search engines. The best ones to use for scholarly material are:

  • Librarians Internet Index - Provides a well-organized point of access for reliable, trustworthy, librarian-selected Internet resources. Covers a broad range of subjects, has both a topical directory arrangement and search capabilities.
  • InfoMine - Virtual library of scholarly Internet resources. Features well organized access; notable for its collection of annotated and indexed links.
  • Academic Info - gateway to freely available academic resources on the web, with annotated entries. General links, related topics, in the news sections.
