host-www.gif (1894 bytes) Book Index with Reviews - access to over 4 million book titles as well as close to 700,000 music and DVD/video titles, updated constantly. Easy to use.
 

Biography Resource Center. Includes full text articles from hundreds of periodicals. Search by nationality, birth or death year, ethnicity, occupation, gender - or combine criteria for a highly customized search. Includes the full text of standard reference titles such as Webster's Biographical Dictionary, Encyclopedia of World Biography (25 vols.), Dictionary of American Biography (20 vols.), Newsmakers and 20 titles in the Who's Who series.

Encyclopedias

britremote.gif (1803 bytes)  Britannica Online. Browse and search the complete encyclopedia plus hundreds of articles not in the print set. Also access to the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (10th edition), and thousands of links to other WWW sites evaluated and selected by Britannica editors.
 

Encyclopedia Americana - In addition to encyclopedia content, also contains a dictionary, thesaurus, atlas and more. User-friendly Web search features; selected and evaluated sources for links to further information.

Grolier Multimedia - derived from the Academic American Encyclopedia database, an 11-million-word repository of text and thousands of images maintained by the encyclopedia's editorial and technical staff. Also contains dictionaries, an atlas, timelines, news, today's date in history, along with thousands of still images, videos and sound files.
 

   McGraw Hill's Encyclopedia of Science and Technology contains the complete text of the best-selling 10th edition. The online site also includes over 2,000 in-depth biographies of leading scientists through history, weekly news updates on breakthroughs and discoveries in science and technology, resources for students, and links to Web sites for further research.  
 

Gale Virtual Reference Library. Available through InfoTrac. Contains full text of several standard reference works in the humanities and social sciences as well as numerous medical encyclopedias.
 

   Oxford Reference Online. From one of the world's most respected reference publishers, the Premium collection brings together 170 well-known and trusted sources such as the complete Dictionaries series, Oxford Companion series plus the complete Oxford Dictionary of Quotations. Specialized subject sources in foreign languages, mythology, science, medicine, philosophy, and more.
 

Articles in Databases

Indexes peer-reviewed, full text articles available in HTML or PDF formats from the world's leading journals and reference sources. is possible to conduct a single "Power Search" search in Academic One File and up to 8 databases in the collection of database titles.  Note: Access to the Thomson Gale Group of databases is made possible by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, and the six Massachusetts Regional Library Systems.
 

host-www.gif (1894 bytes)    Academic Search Complete- largest academic, multi-disciplinary database; full text for 4,500 publications. Most comprehensive scholarly, multi-disciplinary full-text database, with more than 5,300 full-text periodicals, including 4,400 peer-reviewed journals.

 books2.jpg (7821 bytes)  Public Affairs International.  Public affairs and worlds issues with coverage from 1972 to the present. An index to over 1/2 million articles, books, government documents, Internet sites and documents from more than 120 countries. Obviously useful for global issues such as affirmative action, AIDS, ethnicity, climate change, political persecution, women's rights, war and conflict, etc. 
 

  Facts.com - Search the World Almanac, Funk & Wagnalls Encyclopedia, and news coverage - archive and current - from the reliable Facts on File company. Continuing news coverage provided by Reuters. 

world.gif (269 bytes)   FirstSearch service. Note: To use this database, the user can only be logged onto the computer next to the Reference Desk in the Library. 28 databases available on a per search basis; these titles supplement our web based subscription databases.

Newspapers

    material_as.gif (2512 bytes) Research Guide to current and archival news sources. Includes newspapers, television, Web and other media outlets. Includes links to Massachusetts Newsstand providing full text coverage of 14 important newspapers in the State; also contains National Newspapers, a database providing full text for 27 important national and regional newspapers.
