Subscription Databases Available Only to the WSC Community:

 

Citation and abstract information from over 750 educational journals and related documents from the Educational Resource Information Center, and report literature dating back to 1966. More than 107,000 non-journal documents (issued 1993-2004) are available full-text at no cost. There is a 2 page  overview of The ERIC Database( PDF)
We have 3 different ways to access ERIC: 

ProQuest Education Journals - Search the leading full-text journals in education and related fields with coverage beginning in 1988. 745 top educational publications, including nearly 600 of the titles in full text.

Information from children's health to cutting-edge pedagogical theory and practice. Teaching Reference Center - provides journal information for K-12 teachers and librarians. Includes over 260 titles from the most popular trade journals on key educational topics.
Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia - good for school projects

An index to over 1/2 million articles, books, government documents, Internet sites and documents from more than 120 countries. Obviously useful for global education issues.
 

  Kraus Curriculum Development Library.  Quick and easy access to the 20th edition documents. Fully searchable utilizing ERIC descriptors and also searchable by subject, keywords, grades and geographic location.4500 curriculum documents from across the English-speaking world. Older editions can be searched using print indexes that refer to guides on our microfiche collection.

  material_as.gif (2512 bytes) Newspapers. Our Web page that provides links to the 14 major Massachusetts newspapers including the Boston Globe and Worcester Telegram; also 27 national papers such as the Los Angeles Times and Washington Post.  Provides access  to Lexis-Nexis and other archive research databases for full text of regional, national and international news stories along with links to other news media.

      E Books are here at Net Library.  A good supplement to the actual book when it is not available through traditional means, or time is of the essence. Extensive list of titles in Education from curriculum reform, creativity in the classroom, to technology in education, etc.  Remote access is available if you first set up an account on campus. Info for first time users.

Biography Resource Center Includes full text articles from hundreds of periodicals. Search by nationality, birth or death year, ethnicity, occupation, gender - or combine criteria for a highly customized search. Also includes the full text for Who's Who in Education.

  • Little Red Schoolhouse Library - specialty search engines designed for elementary to high school age children. 56 subject categories geared to hobbies and school subjects 
  • Lesson Plans - thousands of free lesson plans, articles, tips and other resources for teachers, including a teaching resources search engine.

  • Teachers Reference Center - a free resource from EBSCO. Indexes more than 260 top periodicals and trade journals for educators. Bibliographic database covers assessment, best practices, continuing education, curriculum development, elementary and higher education, language arts, teacher training, etc.

Search Engines for Kids -

Since these are age-appropriate, they are also a great source of pictures, games, activities and learning resources suitable for use by teachers.

  • Ask for Kids - filtered; no sites on Surf Watch are linked
  • Awesome Library - 17,000 sites in a directory. Carefully reviewed, including the top 5% in education.
  • Cyber Sleuth - Kids  50,000 K-12 student friendly links, also clipart
  • Fact Monster - from Information Please Almanac. Facts and information around the needs of children.
  • Ithaki - a meta search engine for kids. Finds results searching only family-friendly sites, then removes the duplicates across all the search engines and web directories, puts them in order, and displays them in one search results page. Appropriate for ages up to 12.
  • Kids Click - web search directory for kids compiled by librarians, good for ages 6-9. For older kids 8-12, there is a web searching guide.
  • Kids Domain - great for clip art, games, crafts. Also downloads, timely activities, software reviews by kids. Resources for grownups too.
  • Think Quest - from Oracle Education Foundation; innovative learning resources
  • Web Smart Kids - nonprofit educational initiative that helps families use the Internet safely and effectively.
  • Yahooligans - Yahoo's site for kids

Government Sites -

Check out our links to government resources for free, reliable and authoritative material. A great site of note is by the National Endowment for the Humanities -The Best of the Humanities on the Web covering art & culture, literature, history and foreign languages. Every website profiled on the site has been reviewed for content, design and educational impact in the classroom. The site contains dozens of lessons plans to promote active learning.

Web Directories

There are excellent subject directories on the web. that can point you to the best online resources in specific areas of education. These human guides to the Internet are a great way to find the best of the Web, and often find sites that can't be accessed by search engines. The best ones to use in education for scholarly material are:

  • Librarians Internet Index - Provides a well-organized point of access for reliable, trustworthy, librarian-selected Internet resources. Covers a broad range of subjects, has both a topical directory arrangement and search capabilities.
  • InfoMine - Virtual library of scholarly Internet resources. Features well organized access; notable for its collection of annotated and indexed links.
  • Academic Info - gateway to freely available academic resources on the web, with annotated entries. General links, related topics, in the news sections.
