2.  Spanish Course for Fall 2007.

SP933 Sociocultural Study of Latin America     M 4:30-7:30pm    Dr. Elissondo

This course will begin with a study of the dark side of Modernity, that is, the colonialities of power that enforced the process of European hegemonic presence across the American continent. The so called "discovery" of Latin America produced a violent confrontation of cultures where their principal actors - indigenous groups, African slaves, and Spaniards - generated unprecedented hybridities. Special attention will be paid to the Spanish Conquest, indigenous rebellions (past and present), the strategy of "Latinity" applied by France to the Spanish-speaking America, the construction of national identity after independence, main revolutions and repressions in the 20th Century, and the relation between globalization and new leaders (neo-liberals and populists) in the 21st Century.

    Summer I 2008: SP956 Theory and Practice of Translation – Dr. Juan Orbe *one day a week on campus and the rest of the     time on line.

    Summer II 2008: SP901: Women Writers of Spain – Dr. Patricia Marshall.

    Fall 2008: SP955. Effective Teaching of a Foreign Language – Dr. Guillermina Elissondo.

4.  National Latino Month.

On October 19, 2007 Dr. Patricia Fernández-Kelly (Princeton University) will make a presentation on To Welcome the Stranger: Facts and Fictions on Immigration. For more information, posters, etc. please contact Dr. Juan Orbe.
