Internet Worm Cleaning

There are computer viruses circulating around the world that have infected millions of computers with Microsoft Windows operating systems.    

It is very likely that your Windows computer is infected. If it is, and you connect it to our network, it will spread the virus rapidly to other computers that are not protected. You are responsible for the behavior of any personally owned computer that you connect to the campus network; therefore you need to take all reasonable precautions including running antivirus software and keepings its virus definitions up-to-date.

In order to make use of the Internet connection in your residence hall room, your computer must be checked for the current viruses. If your computer is not infected and has been protected against infection, it will be allowed on the network. If it is infected, it must be cleaned and patched before it will be allowed to access the Internet.

Below are the steps:

  1. If you use Windows XP, enable the built in Personal Firewall. To learn how, click here.
  2. Install the Microsoft Update. [This update is NOT required for Windows 98 and Windows ME (Millennium Edition) systems.]

    Select your operating system below:

    **Important: Please add patch #1 first. When complete, add patch #2.

    The update will provide protection from the viruses. The installation requires you to restart your system. Once you have installed the update, RESTART YOUR COMPUTER, then revisit this page and continue with Step 3.

  3. Download Stinger Virus Cleaning program.
    Download this program and run it on your Windows PC using the "Scan Now" command. "Stinger.exe" is from McAfee and provides both detection and removal of specific viruses.

    **Windows XP Users Only: The first time you run Stinger.exe, click on the preferences button, and change the On Virus Detection setting from repair to delete. You must do this to remove viruses from you system.
  4. Restart your computer.
