FAQ (FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS)

Q:
How much does it cost to study at IELI? A: Full-time Day Intensive Classes Spring and Fall are $2900 per semester, Summer
is $1,400 per session or $2,200 for both sessions. Register early and save
$100.00. There is a one-time $50 application fee. Please ask about part-time fees for
intensive day classes.
Community Part-time Day and
Evening Classes are $325 with no application fee.
Register early and save $25.00. Specialty Community classes, such as TOEFL iBT Prep are priced
differently. Please check Programs for more information.

Q:
What are the ESL classes like? A: Classes follow the format of Integrated
Skills, which includes speaking, listening, grammar, vocabulary,
American idioms and expressions and reading comprehension. Each one of
these areas is covered during the course, and depending on the level of
instruction, may be taught according to a specific schedule, or may be
broken up within the class day, and within the week.

Q:
What does TOEFL mean, and how is it part of the Program? A: TOEFL
means “Test of English as a Foreign Language”. A passing score on this
test is required of international students for entrance to most U.S.college
degree programs. Worcester State College requires a score of 79/80 on the iBT TOEFL. Skills
needed to pass the TOEFL exam are integrated into all classes. You
can also take a concentrated class called, "TOEFL iBT".

Q:
Who can I talk to if I have a problem? A: You can talk to your
instructor, the Director of the Program, the Program Coordinator, or the
Program Clerk. Your academic success satisfaction is important to us and
we welcome a chance to assist you.

Q:
What is the neighborhood like near Worcester State College? A: We are in the Tatnuck
Square area of Worcester, on the West Side of the city. It is a residential area, with
many stores and restaurants, including pharmacies, banks and
hairdressers within a 10 – 15 min. walk, less than 2 min. drive.
There is convenient daytime public bus transportation and during Spring and Fall Semesters
a free bus is available to our students that connects many of the colleges in
the city of Worcester.

Q:
How many international students are at Worcester State College? A: There
are many international students on campus enrolled in
various programs including noncredit, undergraduate, and graduate
programs.

Q: What do you recommend for health insurance? A: It is important that students carry sufficient
health coverage. There is more information available on the Internet.

Q:
Is any college credit available for ESL classes? A: ESL classes are
designed as preparation for college entry, and do not carry
college credit. International students can be considered full-time
for Visa purposes when they enroll in the Intensive 20 hour per week
full time
program.

Q:
Are there any scholarships or financial aid money for your Program? A:
At this time scholarship or financial aid is not available.

Q:
How can I use the tutoring services? A: Free tutoring is available by appointment for all our students. Often,
students will come individually, with a friend, or in a small group to practice
conversation, learn new vocabulary, get help with schoolwork, and work on
pronunciation.
INFORMATION ON F-1 (STUDENT) VISAS:

Q:
How do I receive a student visa? A: You must submit
your application to IELI, include the $150.00 deposit/application fee, a
transcript of your previous schooling, a translation of your transcript,
an proof of financial support. (See Application Process - Full Time Program )
Once you have been accepted into the program, the Worcester State
College International Programs Office will issue you an I-20. You
must then make an appointment with the US Embassy or Consulate in your
country to receive your visa.

Q:
How long can I study on a student visa? A: As long as you remain a
full time student and meet the requirements of the U.S. immigration laws
for an F-1 Visa you can continue to study in the U.S. The
Worcester State College International Programs Department will assist
you with this process.

Q:
Can I work on or off campus? A: There are some opportunities for students
with F-1 visas to work ON CAMPUS,
for 20 hours per week maximum. Work off-campus is not allowed.
