Undergraduate Courses

Hi 234, 235 Russian History I, II

A survey of major political, economic, social, intellectual & diplomatic developments from the founding of the Kievan State (862) to the death of Stalin (1953). Special attention will be devoted to major historiographical issues i.e. the Mongol question, the origins of serfdom, the origins of Russian Communism.

 Hi 236, 237 Modern Far East History I, II

A survey of major political, intellectual, economic and diplomatic developments in China, Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia. Special attention will be devoted to the nature of Asian thought, economic modernization and the impact of the West. The course will focus on events from 1600 to the present.

Hi 257 Political Terrorism in Historical Perspective

A comparative study of the major European terrorist groups along with terrorist activities in the United States and the Middle East.

Hi 258 Russian Since the Stalin Era

A study of the major political economic and diplomatic currents in the former Soviet Union and the Russian Federation. Special attention will be devoted to such topics as Destalinization, the development of Detente, the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Gorbachev Revolution.

Hi 259 Crisis Management

A study of conflict resolution the course will focus on a number of crises during the twentieth century. The origins of conflict will be examined along with attempts to avoid major clashes -- i.e. World Wars I & II, the Cold War, Cuban Missile Crisis.

Hi 309 Diplomatic History of Modern Europe

An analysis of the foreign policies of the major European countries from the Congress of Vienna (1815) to the formation of the European Union. Special attention will be devoted to the causes of World Wars I & II the origins of the Cold War.

Hi 316 American-Russian Relations 1781-Present

A study of American-Russian/Soviet, Russian relations from their inception to the contemporary scene the period from 1917 will be stressed.

Hi 317 The U.S. & East Asia

An examination of U.S. relations with the major Asian countries. China, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia from 1784 to the present. Special attention will be devoted to the China trade, U.S.-Chinese Communist relations, the Pacific War and the Vietnam Conflict.

Hi 356 The History of the Cold War

An analysis of the origins of the Cold War followed by a number of case studies in U.S. Soviet relations since World War II. Special attention will be devoted to the historiographical issues orthodoxy, revisionist, post revisionist interpretations of the Cold War.

Hi 910 The Study/Writing of History

Historical Methodology the viewpoints of major historians during the 19th and 20th centuries, the emergence of the New History, i.e. psychohistory, biohistory, quantification history, oral history, early childhood & family history.

Hi 916 Revolutions in the Twentieth Century

A study of a number of theories concerning revolutionary movements along with a comparative analysis of the major revolutions during the 20th century i.e. Russian, Chinese, Cuban, Nazi and Mexican.

Hi 920 Japan in the 20th Century

An examination of Japan's emergence as a world power, the demise of democracy during the Hopeful Decade (1920-1930) the resurgence of militarism (1930-1940), the Pacific War, the occupation and developments since 1952.

Hi 922 U.S. Soviet Relations

An analysis of American Soviet relations since 1917 to the present. Special attention will be devoted to the issue of recognition, origins of the Cold War and current trends.

Hi 924 Selected Topics in U.S.-East Asian Relations

A study of key issues in U.S.-East Asian Relations during the 20th century i.e. the Pearl Harbor controversy, the use of the A-Bomb, the recognition of the Peoples Republic of China, origins of the Korean War and America's involvement in Vietnam.

Hi 952 Russia in the Twentieth Century

An examination of the major political, economic and diplomatic developments in the Soviet Union/Russian Federation. Special attention will be devoted to the nature of Stalinism, the Cold War, the rise of Khrushchev, the Brezhnev era and Detente, the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Hi 953 The Mind of Modern Russia

An analysis of major intellectual currents from the Muscovite Era to the Dissident Movement of the 1960's. Special attention will be devoted to the impact of religion Marxism-Leninism, the Enlightenment in Russia along with the creating of the new Soviet Union.

Hi 970 China in the Twentieth Century

A study of the major political economic and diplomatic developments in China from the Revolution of 1911 to the reforms of the Deng Xiaoping era. Special attention will be devoted to Maoism, the Communist take-over in China, the cultural revolution and the nature of China's foreign policy since 1949.

PO 380 American Foreign Policy Since the Cold War

An analysis of the decision making process in the conduct of U.S. foreign policy. The roles of the President, Congress, the States, the Intelligence Community, the military in the making of foreign policy. A number of case studies will be included.

PO 370 Crisis Politics

A study of the origins of violence, revolution, terrorism during the contemporary scene. Special attention will be devoted to violence in America.
