This program is designed for individuals seeking the Initial License. Candidates for this program must hold a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate instructional field: a major in the Arts & Sciences or an inter-disciplinary major and a Provisional License.

A baccalaureate degree in the areas of intended licensure usually indicates that the individual satisfies the subject-matter knowledge competency—one of the seven required competencies for teacher certification. Courses in this program prepare middle/secondary school teachers for the six pedagogic or educational practices competencies. The courses are thus competency related; each course addresses specific competencies while the entire program prepares middle/secondary school teachers for the challenges of responding to the needs and developmental characteristics of middle/secondary grade students. This program has a field-based experiences component: a seventy-five-hour pre-practicum field experience involving guided school observation, and a practicum (student teaching) experience of a minimum of one-hundred-and-fifty clock hours in the middle/secondary school grades. The seventy-five-hour pre-practicum field experience is done in three pre-practicum courses, while the student teaching experience is undertaken and supervised in the teaching practicum course. A teaching practicum seminar course is held concurrently with the teaching practicum to provide students the opportunities for reflection and shared experiences.

Admission Requirements:
1. Hold a Bachelors degree from a regionally accredited school.
2. Pass the MTEL communications and literacy and content area tests.
3. Have a 2.7 GPA in the major or a score above 75 on MTEL content area test.
