The Financial Aid Office uses standardized student expense budgets when calculating need. Budgets are reviewed and updated annually, and include tuition, fees, books, room and board, transportation, and personal expenses. The College may adjust a student's budget for unusual individual circumstances.

The following table shows the student expense budgets used by the Financial Aid Office during the 2004-2005 academic year. Costs for the 2005-2006 academic year may be different; tuition and fees are subject to approval and change by the Massachusetts Legislature, the Massachusetts Higher Education Coordinating Council, and/or the Worcester State College Board of Trustees.  2005-2006 financial information will be updated shortly.  Please call the Bursar's Office for current tuition and fee rates.

Evening, Graduate and Summer Charges

Evening undergraduate, graduate and summer courses are charged at a different rate from standard day courses.  Click the following link to go to the Continuing Education Office's website and find the upcoming semester's courses and charges:

Student Health Insurance

Undergraduate degree seeking students enrolled in nine (9) or more credits per semester, and graduate degree seeking students enrolled in seven (7) or more credits per semester are required, by State regulation, to carry individual health insurance.  Students will be enrolled in the College sponsored plan, and billed accordingly.  For the 2005-2006 the change is $1,229.  Students who have appropriate alternative coverage must complete a waiver form at the time of payment to waive the mandatory insurance premium.  Any student not completing a waiver will be billed for insurance. The insurance coverage is not adjustable and is non-refundable after the add-drop period.

Expected Family Contribution

The amount a family is expected to contribute to college costs is calculated by using financial information provided on the FAFSA. That estimate may be adjusted by the Financial Aid Office based upon verified data and/or individual circumstances. Components of this calculation include:

* family income

* family assets

* number of family members

* number of family members attending college at least half-time (excluding parents)

* unusual family expenses

Need

Need for financial aid is determined by subtracting the expected family contribution from the cost of attendance. The Financial Aid Office attempts to meet financial need by offering students a financial aid package of different types of financial aid.

Outside Resources

The College Policy on outside resources is all funds from private scholarships that are not listed on your award letter will be considered a resource to meet any unmet need you may have before reducing any of your financial aid.  We will reduce loans first, then work-study before reducing any grant or scholarship aid that we awarded you.  Students must notify the Financial Aid Office as well as the Bursar's Office in writing of any assistance received from a source other than Worcester State College .
