Certificate in Supervision

Most supervisors come from the ranks — good employees who are given an opportunity to advance their careers. Usually this transition occurs rapidly, requiring the supervisor to learn management skills by trial and error while trying to get the work done. This program series is designed to enhance the new supervisor's skills through training that supports the supervisor's on-the-job learning experiences.

In today’s work world the need to work in teams and to work with other skilled people requires a level of interpersonal and leadership skill never before seen. This is particularly true of the experienced person, one who is skilled in the tools and processes of his or her work and is now expected to coordinate that work with others. Some of these people will be tapped to provide their leadership ability in a formal role as supervisors. But many more will continue in their roles as technical experts who are looked to for leadership by their fellow working colleagues. Those who provide such leadership in both informal and formal roles need the skills to effectively lead on the job.

The Center for Business and Industry offers the highly successful leadership certificate program developed and presented by Dan Pelley. Mr. Pelley’s courses have prepared over 5,000 leaders in New England.

Who Should Attend?

The Certificate in Supervision prepares both those who are moving into supervisory management roles and those who must lead from their positions of expertise in their craft and influence.

Hands-On Training for the Supervisor

Presentations are combined with case studies, videos, role-plays, games, exercises and homework. The presentations provide a framework of knowledge. Each presentation is supported by a case study or other exercise so participants can "try-out" the concepts. Participants then share their experiences and learn from the experiences of other participants through class discussions. Participants also apply program concepts on their jobs through homework assignments.

Each course meets in a four-hour session once a week for four weeks. Participants will apply course concepts between sessions.

The Certificate in Supervision courses are delivered at our clients' worksites to ensure relevance and authenticity in our instruction.
