Finding Internships, Volunteer, Community Service Opportunities and Developing an Awareness of How These Experiences Can Benefit Me

Experiential learning is an important part of the college experience.  These opportunities allow you to apply what you are learning in the classroom to other environments.  Through completing an internship you can gain experience, expand your career network, enhance your skills, add to your resume/portfolio, and explore a variety of work environments.  Through a well designed internship you will have the opportunity for both intellectual and ethical growth.  Please call Career Services at 508.929.8072 to set up an appointment to discuss your internship search.

Students may do internships for credit or without credit.  Refer to the Worcester State College Catalog, "Internships" section for specific guidelines that apply to all students who hope to intern for credit.  Some departments have additional requirements.  If you seek credit, it is important that you find and speak to a faculty sponsor early in the semester prior to the proposed internship.

Did you know??

"According to the 2005 Experiential Education Survey conducted

by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, 45% of employer

respondents said "they offer higher salaries to incoming hires with

intern/co-op experience than they offer those without such experience...On

average, converting from an intern or co-op to full-time hire means adding

6.5 percent to the starting salary."

We also have a variety of internship directories.  We provide assistance with preparing resumes/cover letters, practicing interview skills, and assembling your portfolio.  You may find that developing your own internship will produce the best placement.  We can help you pursue this option.

The Colleges of Worcester Consortium, Inc., Offices of Career Services, host a Career Fair each spring.  This event offers both job and internship opportunities.  For more information, visit www.cowc.org.

The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars offers students "the opportunity to gain an internship experience of a lifetime, amid the backdrop of Washington's politics, policies, places, and people in the highest levels of leadership." The Career Services Director is the Campus Liaison for this internship program.  The Washington Center requires that credits be earned, so please refer to the college catalog, the Campus Liaison, and your faculty sponsor to make certain that you are eligible.  In addition, students who are residents of MA may qualify for significant financial assistance from The Washington Center and the Board of Higher Education.  Information on this financial assistance is available from the Campus Liaison.  For more information on the internship program itself, visit the following website:
