May 14, 2008
Harwich, MA – The seventh seeded Worcester State
College Lancers gave the second seeded Wheaton College Lyons all
they could handle Wednesday night at Whitehouse Field before falling
in the bottom of the eleventh inning by the final score of, 4-3.
In the bottom of the twelfth, Scott Guillerault (S. Portland,
ME) hit a one out single to center followed by an infield single
by Sean Munley (Trenton, NJ). Catcher Jeff Lieneck
(Foxboro, MA) singled up the middle to score Guillerault with
the game-winning run. Wheaton got on the board in the bottom of the
first inning taking a, 1-0, lead. With two out, Guillerault was hit
by a pitch and designated hitter Sean Munley (Trenton, NJ)
reached after catcher’s interference. Right fielder Robert Foote
(Walpole, MA) then singled through the right side to get the
Lyons on the board. Worcester State starter Joey Lucier
(Brockton, MA), who came into the game with a 3-3 record, had
good stuff early he struck out five Lyons over the first two
innings. The Lancers threatened in the top of the third
inning. With one out sophomore Ryan LaPrade (Leominster, MA)
rapped a single to left field. Junior centerfielder Matt Hart
(Easton, MA) followed with a shot to right field that just got
over the outstretched glove of the Wheaton right-fielder for a
double putting runners on second and third. Wheaton starter
Chris McDonough (Weymouth, MA) got out of the jam, however,
getting a strikeout and inducing an inning ending grounder. In the bottom of the third, Lucier ran in to
trouble. The right-hander hit the left-fielder Paul Malaguti
(Andover, MA) to lead off the frame. After getting the first of
the inning, Lucier hit Guillerault to put runners on first and
second. Wheaton loaded the bases when Munley hit a ball to first
base but the Guillerault beat the throw to second base to load the
bases. Lucier got out of the jam by getting Foote to line out to
first base and following with his sixth strikeout of the night to
end the threat. Worcester State scored the equalizer in the top
of the fifth inning. With two out, Ryan LaPrade (Leominster, MA)
beat out an infield hit and then stole second base. Matt Hart beat
out an infield hit and LaPrade never stopped running as he scored
all the way from second base to knot the game up at, 1-1. In the top of the seventh the Lancers put
together a two out rally. Freshman Corey Abbascia (Shrewsbury,
MA) reached on an error and went to third on a single by Ryan
Raleigh (Cranston, RI). But McDonough got LaPrade to ground out
to end the frame. In the bottom of the seventh, Wheaton got a
runner to third as centerfielder Ken Depasse (Holden, MA)
reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a wild
pitch. Depasse reached third on a groundout by Malaguti. Lucier
got Jake Yagjian (Brewster, MA) to hit a foul pop up to third
base before getting Guillerault to fly out to right field to end the
Lyons’ threat. In the top of the eighth, the Lancers loaded
the bases with one out. Ryan Hawley (Shrewsbury, MA), Chris
Logan (Spencer, MA) and Nate Nelson (Worcester, MA) were
all aboard. Freshman Nick Fluegge (Ware, MA) pinch hit and
delivered the biggest hit of his young career as he slapped one back
up the middle scoring Hawley and Logan to give the Lancers a, 3-1
lead. Josh Simmons (Cranston, RI) came in to relieve
McDonough and got a strikeout to end the inning. McDonough was outstanding on the mound for the
home team. The senior left-hander went 7.2 innings, scattered 7
hits, and struck out 7. Wheaton battled back in the bottom of the
frame. With one out, Foote and Lieneck reached on errors but
Lucier recorded his tenth strikeout of the night and got Sean
Buckley (Webster, MA) to fly out to right field to send the game
to the ninth with Worcester State leading, 3-1, setting the stage
for Guillerault’s heroics. Lucier went 9 innings getting a no decision.
