Worcester, MA - The Worcester State College volleyball team defeated the Nighthawks of Newbury College Tuesday evening, 3-1, in Lancer Gym on the campus of Worcester State College.

The Lancers, who have won six straight matches, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead winning the first set 30-28. For the first time in their winning streak Worcester State dropped a set. Newbury took the second set by the score of 30-26. With the match tied at one set a piece, the Lancers took control, winning the third set 30-20 and then the final set by a count of 30-15.

Worcester State was led by the tandem of Rochelle Lavoie (Fall River) and Christina Keenan (Quincy). Lavoie, the reigning MASCAC Player of the Week, totaled 25 assists in the match while Keenan played well defensively notching 34 digs over the four sets.

The victory improves Worcester State’s record to 7-1 on the season while Newbury falls to 10-3.

The Lancers will be back in action this weekend as they participate in the Worcester City Tournament held at WPI. Newbury is off until next Wednesday when they travel to Lesley College.
