2008 Worcester State College
Softball Preview
The 2008 Worcester State College softball team fell just short of reaching the 2007 Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference postseason tournament but are looking forward to in influx of new talent that should lead them back to the postseason for the first time since the 2004 season. Head Coach Lynne Olson is excited with the recruiting class that is joining a solid core of veterans this season.
In the circle this season the Lancers will rely on four arms. Senior Danielle Caron and junior Jessalyn Hyland each recorded a pair of wins last season. Caron led the team in ERA a year ago while Hyland paced the staff with a team-high 54 strikeouts. Sophomore Catherin Costopoulos will join the staff this year and look to push the incumbents for innings. Freshman Samantha Daly should also provide some help for the Lancer pitching staff in 2008.
Around the infield, sophomore Kara Sztuka returns to first base. Last season, Sztuka batted .302 with a team-high 11 RBI. Sophomore Ashley Loomer returns to second base this season after starting every game last season as a freshman. Versatile Veronica Clark will handle the shortstop chores this season. Clark has played catcher and centerfield thus far in her two year Worcester State career. Clark was an All-MASCAC 1st team catcher as a freshman. Last season she batted .280 with 11 RBI. At third base, 2007 All-MASCAC 2nd team selection Katherine Kelly returns. Behind the plate this year will be Ashley Nye who returns as the only other All-MASCAC player from a year ago.
It will be an all new outfield this season for the Lancers. Freshman Karen Feeley will get the nod in left field. Freshman Heather Camara will patrol centerfield this season as well as serve as a backup if needed at shortstop and first base. In right field, Maureen Crossman will get the starting nod and will be backed up by freshman Treasa O’Neil and Katherine Prior. O’Neil will also be in the mix at shortstop this year.
