2007 Worcester State College
Softball Preview

The 2007 Worcester State College softball team will be looking to return to the MASCAC playoffs after a just falling short last season with a disappointing 11-19 (7-7 MASCAC) last season losing the season ending doubleheader versus Framingham State to secure a playoff berth.  Under Head Coach Lynne Olson, Worcester State hopes to blend the returning veterans experience with a talented freshman class and challenge the conference for a playoff spot.

Worcester State will boast a strong pitching staff this season as sophomore Jessalyn Hyland (Swansea, MA) who had a team-high 5 wins and 54 strikeouts last season will return to the circle as the Lancer ace.  Senior Amanda Michaud (Somerset, MA) will join Hyland as a conference pitcher.  Michaud will also see some action playing first base this season.  Also, in the rotation this season are juniors Danielle Caron (Peabody, MA) and Heather O’Neil (Norwood, MA).

Veronica Clark (Worcester, MA) is the top hitter returning to the Lancers lineup.  A year ago as a freshman, Clark batted .349 and had a team high 8 doubles and 25 RBI.  Clark will split time between catching and playing in the Lancer outfield.  Sophomore Ashley Nye (Marion, MA) will share time behind the plate and at third base for the Lancers this season.

Freshman Kara Sztuka (Webster, MA) will be competing for the starting job at first base.  The middle infield should shake out with the combination of freshmen Ashley Loomer (Pepperell, MA) at second base and Ashley Ducharme (Townsend, MA) at shortstop.  Freshman Katherine Kelly (Burlington, MA) will get the starting nod at third base for the 2007 Lancers.

Michelle Frazier (Tewksbury, MA),
is a junior this season and will be looked at by Coach Olson to play a strong role in the outfield as well in the circle.  Also in the outfield, newcomer and former T&G All-Star Jackie Pellegrino (West Boylston, MA) will be looked to in her first year to patrol the Lancer outfield this season along with freshman Tina Andersen (Worcester, MA).  Senior Brittany Rheault (Oxford, MA) should see expanded action after serving in a utility and pinch running role a year ago.  Senior Sara Chamberlain (Hudson, MA) returns for her final year in the outfield.  Also in the outfield is freshman Julieanna Rodriguez-Smith (Worcester, MA).

Coach Olson and the Lancers head to Florida on March 19th for their season opener against SUNY New Paltz.
