Softball Game Recap

Lancer Softball Sweeps Mass Maritime, 11-0 & 13-0
Worcester, MA – The Worcester State College softball team kept their playoff hopes alive with a Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of the visiting Buccaneers of Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Monday afternoon. The game was previously scheduled for April 7th. The win improves the Lancers to 6-19 (4-6 MASCAC) on the year, while Mass Maritime drops to 2-18 (0-10 MASCAC).
In game 1, the Lancers got a 3-for-3, 5 RBI performance from freshman Kara Sztuka (Webster, MA) as the Lancer rolled, 11-0. Worcester State had 7 hits in the game and benefited from eight Buccaneer walks. Senior hurler Amanda Michaud (Somerset, MA) got her second win of the year scattering five hits and striking out three batters.
Mass Maritime’s Michelle Smith (Clinton, CT) had a pair of hits in game 1 for the visitors.
In game 2,
Worcester State knocked out nine hits and once again were the beneficiaries of
eight free passes. Freshman Jackie Pelligrino (W. Boylston, MA) and
senior Sara Chamberlain (Hudson, MA) each scored three runs in the night
cap. The big blow came from Sztuka who belted her first collegiate homerun over
the left centerfield fence in the Lancer third inning.
Sophomore Jessalyn Hyland (Swansea, MA) got her second win of the year
and first collegiate shutout as she tossed a two-hitter and struck out five
along the way.
Worcester State will return to the diamond on Wednesday when they travel to Fitchburg State. Mass Maritime will host Bridgewater State on Tuesday afternoon.
