April 19, 2007
Softball Gets Swept By Nichols, 9-3 & 5-0
Worcester, MA – The Worcester State College softball team’s struggles continued Thursday evening as the visiting Bison of Nichols College swept a non-conference doubleheader from the Lancers at Rockwood Field. Nichols took the first game by the final of, 9-3, and shut out the hosts, 5-0, in the nightcap. Worcester State falls to 2-17 on the year while Nichols jumps up over the .500 level at 12-10.
In game 1,
Nichols pounded out 15 hits on their way to the, 9-3, win. The Bison scored
three runs in the first and third frames to give the visitors more than enough
breathing room. Shortstop Jennifer Dudney (Oxford, MA) and catcher
Ashley Bannon (Northford, CT) each had three hits and a pair of RBI in
support of pitcher Ashley Wyland (Schenectady, NY) who got her third win
of the season. Leadoff hitter Loren Rozanski (Plainville, CT) and third
baseman Tracy Cullity (Manchester, NH) also had multiple hit games with
Rozanski also knocking in a pair of runs.
Worcester State managed five hits on the game with the major spark coming off
the bat of pitcher Danielle Caron (Peabody, MA) when she drove in all
three Lancer runs with a bases-loaded double to left field.
In game 2, the game was scoreless after three innings before Nichols plated four
runs in the top of the fourth inning. The first Bison run came on a hit batter
with the bases loaded. Cullity drove in the second Nichols run with a sacrifice
fly to centerfield that scored Kayla Hebert (Johnston, RI) who had earned
a walk earlier in the inning. The final two runs came across on a misplayed fly
ball by the Lancer outfield. Nichols scored their fifth and final run of the
day when pitcher Lauren Person (Vernon, CT) hit a sacrifice fly to right
field scoring Rozanski who led off the inning with a single through the left
side of the Lancer infield.
Offensively for Worcester State Kara Sztuka (Webster, MA) had a pair of hits.
Person got
her ninth win of the year, while Worcester State hurler Jessalyn Hyland
(Swansea, MA) took the loss.
Worcester State will return to the diamond on Saturday as they begin a run of 8
MASCAC contests in 4 days. Saturday the Lancers begin with a conference
doubleheader against MCLA. Nichols will host Wentworth on Saturday.
