Drops Pair To Clark, 5-0 & 13-5
Worcester, MA – Clark University belted five homeruns on the day including three in the nightcap by shortstop Heather Warren (Upland, CA) to sweep the Worcester State College softball team by the final scores of, 5-0 & 13-5, Tuesday afternoon at Clark’s O’Brien Field. Worcester State was the home teams in both contests but the games were played at Clark due to field conditions.
In game 1, after a scoreless first inning, Clark plated three runs in the top of the second inning as leadoff hitter Lauren Blake (Oakland, ME) blasted a three run homer over the left field fence to give the Cougars a, 3-0, lead after 1 1/2 innings.
Clark added another run in the top of the third inning when first baseman Joanna Clark (Windham, ME) singled up the middle driving home Darcy Kurashige-Elliott (Berkeley, CA) who led off the inning with a walk.
In the top of the fifth the Cougars added another run as Clark knocked in her second run of the game to extend the Clark lead to, 5-0.
Worcester State pitcher Jessalyn Hyland (Swansea, MA) took the loss for the Lancers. Clark’s Melissa Traft (Milton, MA) improved to 7-2 in the victory for the Cougars.
In game 2, Clark took a, 1-0, lead in the top of the first as Kurashige-Elliott drove in Warren who doubled for the first hit of the game.
Worcester State answered back in the bottom of the second tying the game when Veronica Clark (Worcester, MA) rapped a double to right center, and after moving to third, scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Amanda Michaud (Somerset, MA).
Clark climbed right back into the lead when Warren launched her first homer of the game; a one-out solo homerun over the left field fence to give Clark a, 2-1, lead. Kurashige-Elliott followed with a double and moved to third on a single to left by Traft. Clark followed with a single to center driving Kurashige-Elliott home with the third Clark run of the game.
Worcester State tied the game at, 3-3, in the bottom of the fourth getting a pair of runs across the plate on wild pitches.
In the top of the fifth, Clark re-took the lead when first baseman Clark shot a ball up the middle to plate Warren who led off the inning with a double.
Clark batted around in the top of the sixth inning and posted five runs with the big blast coming from Warren who popped a three run homer out of the yard. The Cougars would add four more in the top of the seventh as catcher Lauren Ackien (Tacoma, WA) went back to back with Warren’s third of the game to increase the Clark lead to, 13-3. The Lancers would add a pair in the bottom of the seventh for the, 13-5, final.
Warren’s line in game 2 was 5-for-5, 5 RBI, 5 runs, 2 doubles and the three home runs.
Traft picked up her second win on the day for Clark, while Michaud took the loss for the Lancers.
Worcester
State will return to action on Wednesday when they host Anna Maria. Clark will
return to the diamond tomorrow when they host Coast Guard.
