September 1, 2007 MILTON, Mass. - Ryan Van De Giesen (North Attleboro, MA) threw for 233 yards and rushed for a pair of touchdowns to lead Curry to a 38-26 win against Worcester State in the 2007 season opener for both squads. The Colonels extended their regular-season overall win streak to 18 and their regular-season home win streak to 23. The Lancers broke on top quickly, as Pat Good (Hull, MA) connected with Craig Hill (Milford, MA) on the first play of the game for a 64-yard touchdown at 14:41 of the first quarter. Curry then posted the final four scores of the first half on a 1-yard run by Steve DiFabio (Salem, NH), a 36-yard field goal by David Vincent (Grafton, MA), a 5-yard run by Van De Giesen and a 31-yard pass from Van De Giesen to Felix Borukhov (Newton, MA). At the half, the Colonels led 24-6. The quick-strike Worcester offense cut the Colonels lead to 24-12 at 13:53 of the third frame on a 50-yard pass from Good to Scott Pollard (Taunton, MA). The teams then traded two touchdowns apiece over the final 26 minutes of the game. Curry went ahead 31-12 on a 25-yard interception return for a touchdown by Tim Bloniasz (Leicester, MA). The Lancers responded with a 4-yard Good-to-Pollard connection, followed by Van De Giesen's second touchdown run of the contest (1 yard) and a 10-yard scoring toss from Good to Hill. The Colonels held Worcester to -39 net yards rushing. Curry owned a 398-263 yard edge in total offense and a 36-23 advantage in time of possession. Each team lost two fumbles, while the Colonels also notched a pair of interceptions. Van De Giesen completed 18 of 31 pass attempts, while Borukhov had a game-high 181 receiving yards on nine catches. DiFabio collected 111 yards on the ground to lead all rushers. For Worcester, Good went 19 of 35 for 302 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. Hill and Pollard each had six receptions, for 108 and 101 yards, respectively. Will Chiccarelli (Lynnfield, MA) led Curry with eight tackles, five tackles for loss, a forced fumble and three sacks. Tim Bartucca (North Attleboro, MA) paced the Lancers defensive efforts with a game-high 13 tackles, two tackles for loss and two sacks. Curry resumes play next Saturday at Fitchburg State in a 1:30 p.m. contest, while Worcester celebrates its 2007 home opener by hosting W.P.I. in a 7:00 p.m. game next Friday. |
