September 2, 2006 Worcester, MA – The Worcester State College Lancer football team fell to the Colonels of Curry College by the final score of, 10-7, Friday night on the turf of John F. Coughlin Field in both team’s 2006 season opener. The game was plagued by 6 turnovers and four missed field goals as Curry improves to 1-0 and the Lancers begin 0-1. The two teams played to a scoreless tie in the first quarter before Curry place-kicker David Vincent (Grafton, MA) knocked home a 31 yard field goal on the third play of the second quarter to put the visitors up, 3-0, which stood up for the rest of the half.
After the
teams traded punts early in the third quarter, Worcester State stopped the
Colonels on a 4th and 3 at their own 36 yard line. With 7:48
left on the clock on the 3rd quarter, quarterback Kyle
Beatrice (Swampscott, MA) got Worcester State on the board hitting wide
receiver Tom Gabriel (Wareham, MA) on a 60 yard scoring strike
hitting a streaking Gabriel in stride down the middle of the field to put
the Lancers on top, 7-3. The Lancers had had several chances in the final ten minutes but were unable to capitalize as they lost two of their four fumbles on the night and missed their 3rd field goal of the contest. On the game Curry rushed for 163 yards on the ground led by DiFabio who had 79 yards on 23 carries. Perry Stauffer (Melrose, MA) was outstanding on defense along with linebacker Aaron Storm (Fitchburg, MA) for the Lancers as Stauffer finished the game with 15 tackles and Storm totaled 11. Worcester State will attempt to get in the win column next week when they travel down the road to visit Boynton Hill on the campus of WPI. Curry will host the Falcons of Fitchburg State College next Saturday. |
