Worcester, MA – The Worcester State College
football team fell to the visiting Mariners of Maine Maritime Academy
for the second straight year Saturday afternoon as the visitors knocked
off the Lancers, 12-3, Saturday afternoon at Worcester State’s Coughlin
Field. Worcester State falls to 2-4 (1-3 Bogan) on the season, while
Maine Maritime improves to 3-2 (2-1 Bogan).
Maine Maritime opened the scoring with 2:17 remaining in the first
quarter as a Jim Bower (South Paris, ME) 9 yard touchdown run capped off
a 4 play 52 yard drive by the Mariners. The big play of the drive came
on a 34 yard scamper by Mariner quarterback Brandon Hamilton (Skowhegan,
ME). The conversion attempt failed to set the score at, 6-0.
Early in the 2nd quarter MMA threatened again after a 49 yard pass from
Hamilton to running back Jon Farrin (Boothbay Harbor, ME) brought the
Mariners to the Worcester State 10 yard line but the Lancers stopped the
Maine Maritime offense on a 4th and goal from the 1 yard line when Nick
Galllant (Billerica, MA) and Anthony Figueiredo (Wareham, MA) stuffed a
quarterback sneak.
Worcester State had a chance to get on the board with 9 seconds left in
the half as a MMA fumble was recovered by nose tackle Chris Grautski
(Lunenburg, MA) but the 26 yard field goal attempt sailed wide to leave
the score at, 6-0, at the break.
Worcester State got on the board on their first drive of the second half
as place-kicker Tom Gabriel (Wareham, MA) knocked home a 30 yard field
goal after the Lancers drove the ball 43 yards in 7 plays.
On the ensuing drive the Mariners took the ball all the way down to the
Lancer 9 yard line but once again were foiled on a 4th and goal.
The Lancers go the offense going to open the 4th quarter as they took
the ball over at their own 5 yard line. Worcester State drove to the
Mariner 24 yard line before being intercepted by Mike Riley (Milton, VT)
ending the drive.
The clincher for Maine Maritime came with 3:13 remaining in the game
when Hamilton hit Brandon Goodrich (Waterboro, ME) on a 67 yard scoring
strike.
Maine Maritime out gained Worcester State on the day 311-188.
Worcester State quarterback Pat Good (Hull, MA) was 15-30 on the day for
146 yards. Hamilton finished up 3-8 for 134 yards and a touchdown for
MMA.
Figueiredo led both defenses on the day with 12 solo tackles (16 total),
3 for losses 1 sack and 2 forced fumbles. Linebacker Perry Stauffer
(Melrose, MA) made 13 stops for the Lancer defense.
Worcester State will return to action on Saturday when they travel to
Fitchburg State. Maine Maritime will host Mass Maritime next Saturday as
well.
