Worcester State College Football Game Story

October 28, 2006 Worcester, MA – The Worcester State College football team was defeated on their annual Homecoming game, falling to the visiting Bears of Bridgewater State College by the final score of, 41-20, on the rain soaked turf of Coughlin Field Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Lancers to 3-6 (2-4 NEFC) on the year, while Bridgewater State improves to 6-2 (5-1). Bridgewater State junior Greg Borsari (Kingston, MA) took the opening play from scrimmage for a 69 yard touchdown run as the Bears never looked back. Borsari and backup quarterback Steven Clark (E. Falmouth, MA) each rushed for over 100 yards on the day with Borsari finishing the day with 107 yards on 7 carries and Clark totaling 102, also on 7 carries. Following Borsari’s opening touchdown running back Bruce Burley (Mansfield, MA) capped off a 7 play 56 yard drive with a 6 yard touchdown run to set the score at, 13-0. Worcester State scored the only points of the 2nd quarter when sophomore quarterback Pat Good (Hull, MA) found wide out Matt DeRosa (Burlington, MA) for a 57 yard scoring strike for a halftime score of, 13-7, Bridgewater State. The Bears posted a pair of touchdowns in the 3rd quarter with the first being a sustained drive finished off by Burley’s second touchdown run of the day and the second coming on a 59 yard touchdown pass from Clark to wide receiver Jesse Teixeira (Raynham, MA) that built the Bears lead to 20 points, 27-7.
Senior running back Steve Kasprzak (Tewksbury, MA), who gained 97
yards on a 28 carry day, scored on a 1-yard plunge with 12:51 remaining
in the game to reset the score at, 27-14. Bridgewater State started
their ensuing drive from their own 23 yard line and on the first play,
Clark took off for a 76 yard run before being chased down by Lancer
defensive back Danny Harris (Brockton, MA) at the 1 yard line.
Running back Matt Maroon (Methuen, MA) scored two plays later for
a, 34-4, Bridgewater State lead. Running back Billy Shea (Walpole, MA) added a late touchdown for Worcester State on a reception from Good for the, 41-20, final score. Worcester State was a victim of turnovers all day as the Lancers lost three fumbles and had three passes picked off. Along with Borsari and Clark, Burley carried for 76 yards as Bridgewater State gained 331 total yards on the ground and an even 400 of total offense on the afternoon. Worcester State will close out their 2006 campaign next Saturday when they travel to Westfield State to take on the Owls. Bridgewater State will host Mass Maritime on Saturday in their annual Cranberry Bowl game. |
