FITCHBURG, MA - Worcester State College
amassed 355 yards passing and 459 total yards en route to a 21-7 victory
over Fitchburg State College Saturday at Elliot Field in Fitchburg.
The NEFC conference battle leaves the Falcons at 2-4 overall and 1-3 in
the Bogan Division while the Lancers improve to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in
the Bogan thanks to sophomore quarterback Pat Good (Hull, MA), who fired
three touchdown passes on 21-of-39 passing for 355 yards.
FSC quarterback Jim Miller (East Hampton, NY) was 9-of-23 for 166 yards
and running back William Early (Fitchburg, MA) added 54 yards rushing on
17 carries but it was not enough to combat the potent Worcester attack
who held the ball for over 35 minutes. Lancer senior running back Steve
Kasprzak (Tewksbury, MA) eclipsed the century mark rushing (24 carries,
101 yards) and senior Matt Derosa (Burlington, MA) hauled in eight
passes for 175 yards and two scores.
After a first quarter dominated by defense, the visitors struck for 14
points on consecutive possessions in the second quarter to take a 14-0
halftime lead. The Lancers marched 73 yards in seven plays to open the
scoring paced by Good's arm. The gunslinger was 3-of-5 for 71 yards and
he capped the drive with a 23-yard TD strike to Brian Doherty
(Lunenburg, MA) with 5:13 to play in the half. Doherty would finish with
seven catches and 102 yards.
Worcester came right back after its defense stood tall at its own 35
following a Devon Jennings (Brockton, MA) 45-yard kickoff return for FSC.
Good needed just four plays this time, hitting Derosa with consecutive
passes of 49 and 41 yards with the latter going for six points. Tom
Gabriel (Wareham, MA) nailed the extra point to put the Lancers up 14-0
with 1:26 remaining in the second quarter.
Fitchburg opened the second half strong and finally broke through to the
endzone with 6:46 to play in the third on a 10-play 70-yard scoring
drive capped by a three-yard Early rush up the gut. Matt Jones booted
the extra point to cut the visitors lead in half at 14-7.
But Good would bring extend the lead three scores on the ensuing
possession as Worcester drove 71 yards in 12 plays to increase the lead
to 21-7. The key on the drive was Good's 25-yard pass to Derosa on
fourth-and-nine from the Fitchburg 25 that went for a touchdown.
FSC drove right back down the field, but fumbled at the Worcester
four-yard line to end any hopes of a Falcon comeback. Defensive lineman
Anthony Figueiredo (Wareham, MA) led the Lancers with six tackles, a
forced fumble, two break ups and two sacks, while Matt Leeds
(Bellingham, MA) and Perry Stauffer (Melrose, MA) each had five solo
tackles. Daniel Underwood (Bellflower, CA) and Allen Morais (Ashby, MA)
buoyed the Falcons' defense, making six tackles apiece.
Fitchburg travels to Mass. Maritime next Saturday while the Lancers
visit Coast Guard.
