For Immediate Release: 9/19/03 Contact: John Meany (508) 929-8730 Worcester, MA – Senior tailback Greg Wood (Auburn, MA) ran for 103 yards and two touchdowns and added an 87 yard kickoff return for a touchdown as Worcester State (2-1) knocked off visiting Salve Regina (0-3), 45-20 in New England Football Conference college football action Friday evening. Worcester State, after Steve Kasprazak (Tewksbury, MA) returned the opening kickoff 55 yards, took just three plays to drive 37 yards and get on the board with Wood’s first touchdown of the game on a 4-yard run. After exchanging punts, Salve Regina answered back driving 56 yards on 5 plays culminating with quarterback Robert Higle (Sleepy Hollow, NY) connecting with Antonio Guzzo (Sleepy Hollow, NY) on a 15 yard scoring strike. The Lancers blocked the extra point try giving WSC the 7-6 lead. The Lancers exploded for 25 points in the second quarter highlighted by Wood’s kickoff return. The return by the Lancer running back was a record-breaker as he surpassed Kevin Gniadek for the Worcester State record for career all-purpose yardage. Next up for Wood is the WSC all-time rushing record held by John Smith. The senior needs just 103 yards to surpass that mark. The Lancers took a 39-14 lead into intermission. Neither team was able to put points on the board in the third quarter. Both Salve Regina and Worcester State added fourth quarter touchdowns for a final score of 45-20. After missing last week’s game, WSC quarterback Cean Oksanish (S. Grafton, MA) returned to go 13-24 for 182 yards and 2 touchdowns. Salve Regina was led offensively by back Sean Peters (Portsmouth, RI) who carried 29 times for 144 yards and a touchdown. The Lancers will return to action next Saturday when then travel to Cambridge to take on MIT. Salve Regina will host the Nichols College Bison for a 6:00 pm kickoff. ##### |
