Shuts Out WPI, 3-0

The Worcester State College women’s soccer team
evened their record at, 2-2, as they won their 2007
home opener Tuesday night on a rain-soaked Coughlin
Field shutting out the visiting Engineers of WPI,
3-0. The loss drops WPI to 3-2 on the season.
Junior Tiffany Rotatori (Auburn, MA) opened the scoring for the Lancers as she converted on a breakaway pass from junior Katelyn Bonetti (Plymouth, MA) racing past the WPI defense to give Worcester State a, 1-0, lead in the 4th minute of action. Engineer goaltender Elizabeth Glasson (Worcester, MA) would hold the Lancers scoreless the rest of the half as she made five saves in the half. Worcester State out shot WPI, 12-2, in the first frame.
The one goal lead remained until the 53rd minute when freshman Sarah Connors (Gardner, MA) knocked home a rebound off of the WPI keeper to increase the margin to, 2-0. The goal was Connors’ first of her career.
Amanda Santos (Milford, MA) rounded out the scoring when she corralled a bouncing pass from sophomore Kim Vail (W. Newbury, MA) and knocked it into the back of the net for the, 3-0, final.
Glasson finished the night with 12 saves, while counterpart Erin Doherty (Uxbridge, MA) stopped 3 Engineer offerings in the win.
Worcester State will return to action next Tuesday when they travel to non-conference foe Plymouth State University. WPI will host Fitchburg State on Saturday afternoon.
