Worcester State Upsets #5 William Smith in NCAA 1st Round, 2-0
Geneva. NY- For the second straight season the Worcester State College women's soccer team has advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament defeating the host Herons of William Smith College by the final tally of, 2-0, Saturday at Cozzens Field.
After a scoreless first half, the Lancers opened
up the scoring in the 58th minute when junior
Tiffany Rotatori (Auburn, MA) scored on a
breakaway which she tucked into the lower left
corner of the goal to give Worcester State a,
1-0, lead.
Eight minutes later senior co-captain Kelsey Irish (Hudson, MA) would add an insurance goal when she lobbed shot across the box that struck the inside of the far post and deflected into the net.
Lancer goalkeeper Erin Doherty (Uxbridge, MA) stopped three shots in the win.
The women's team, which had
reached the NCAA tournament each of the past
four seasons, handed William Smith their first
loss of the year. The Herons had been
ranked #5 in the nation in the last NSCAA
coaches poll of the year.
Last season the Worcester State season ended in the second round of the NCAA tournament when they lost to Endicott College in penalty kicks.
Worcester State advances to the second round on Sunday when they will play the winner of the Union College/Elizabethtown (PA) match at 1:00 pm
